The Learning Institute develops literacy assessments for grades 1-11 in reading and writing. TLI's literacy assessments are designed specifically to prepare students for mastery of key literacy skills (referred to as the CORE 14) and success on the state accountability examinations. Assessments are aligned to each district's unique curriculum and may be administered whenever the district determines it is appropriate.
Reading assessments typically include enhanced multiple choice items and an open response question. For the 11th grade, reading assessments have multiple reading passages with multiple choice questions, each followed by an open response item. Question styles and item formatting follow the conventions of the Arkansas Benchmark and End-of-Course assessments. All reading passages are analyzed prior to inclusion on a district's assessment for readability using a variety of metrics and are assessed for quality by the TLI literacy staff working with a committee of teachers from around the state. Multiple choice results are processed using pre-barcoded answer documents, while the open response items are graded at the district level using a detailed rubric provided with each TLI assessment.
Writing assessments consist of a writing prompt and multiple choice items designed to assess more grammar oriented student learning expectations. The results of the multiple choice portion of the assessments are processed with scannable answer documents, while the prompt responses are graded at the district level recorded by teachers on the TLI Web Portal.
The Learning Institute provides members up to eight (8) assessments (reading and writing combined) per grade per academic year. For the 2006-2007 school year, TLI provided nearly 3000 different customized assessments as part of the literacy program.
